Notes on Swim Meets
Ø Participation in meets is always at the discretion of swimmers and their parents. We do not have mandatory meet participation. It’s an option that is available to swimmers.
Ø Coaches will offer advice to parents and swimmers on the readiness of a swimmer to participate in events at meets. At times swimmers may need to build stamina to compete in longer events and may need to refine their stroke technique on events like the breast stroke and butterfly before competing.
Ø Swimmers compete against children of the same gender and of similar ages at meets. Heats are also segregated by “seed times” to assure swimmers are in the pool against others of similar ability. A ten year-old girl will swim against other nine and ten year-old girls who swim at a similar pace.
Ø There are participation fees for meets. The cost of participating in a one day meet with three events swam will range from $15 to $20 per swimmer.
Ø Our most senior and certified coaches are assigned to work meets. For safety reasons only swimmers, coaches and meet officials are allowed in the pool deck area during meets. Spectator areas are provided for parents and others who attend the meet.
Ø Swim meets last a long time and are held in warm humid conditions. If you are new to swimming, ask an experienced parent what to do to best enjoy the “swim meet experience!”
